Diary:

TREASURER’S NOTE

March 2016

First of all perhaps I could introduce myself as the new Satipanya Treasurer. I first met Bhante in the mid-1980s at the Birmingham Buddhist Vihara, and I have been practicing in the Mahasi tradition ever since, although maybe not as regularly as I would have liked! I became Treasurer in November 2015.

PayPal

As many of you will be aware, from late 2015 onwards, we have introduced a PayPal button on the Satipanya Donations page. Ideally we would like to have all donations to Satipanya made via PayPal. It is simple - all you need is a credit or debit card. You don't need to be signed up to PayPal to donate this way. The same applies to all payments that you might make to Satipanya, such as when you make a deposit to attend one of our Courses, and so on.

This will make accounting so much easier for us, and especially for our Accountancy Firm. The small percentage that PayPal charges Satipanya for each transaction is offset to some extent by what we would have had to pay our Accountants, if we had stayed with the older and rather more cumbersome way we used to keep our accounting records. Also we believe that in any case PayPal is pretty well the cheapest on the market for the sort of service they offer.

If you have a PayPal account, you can make donations through Paypal Giving Fund.

‘Paypal asks eBay customers to visit our organisation’s homepage on eBay. Share this page with your friends and encourage them to add our charity as their favourite. They’ll then be prompted to donate when buying or selling on eBay.’

You add Satipanya as a charity you wish to donate to and you will be reminded every time you buy something. In this way you can make a small donation every time you visit eBay.

This is the link to the eBay page: Ebay for Satipanya, click on Shop, enter your items and click Donate.

Accommodation Block

We are still hoping to go ahead with the build during the summer. We should be certain about it by the end of April. He’ll keep you posted.  Bhante says:  "It won’t disturb the meditators too much since it is on the other side of the property to the meditation hall, and anyway apart from occasional rumble and bang, building is surprisingly quiet. Most takes place inside." And in any case distractions, provided they aren't too intrusive, are all "grist to the mill" for the determined Mahasi meditator!

As a reminder, there are different ways you can support this project:

Through a bank:

·       If you are already making a standing order, you could add a small amount to your regular payment.

·        If you wish to set up a standing order, it easier for us if you do this either with a visit to your bank or by Internet Banking. You will have to email me for the Banking details since we have taken them down from the website due to abuse.

Through PayPal:

·       A very straightforward way to offer a continuing donation is via our PayPal button on the Donations page - just click on the Donate button, and select the "Make this recurring (monthly)" option that will come up.

After a course:

·        If you come on a course at Satipanya you could add an extra day or more to your donation, the suggested daily rate currently being £35.

Make an occasional gift:

·       whenever you feel the desire to help us.

Our Donation page is always ready to receive gifts. Help us complete the project.

Many thanks.

N.B. All the courses are serviced by assistants.

As an assistant, we do not expect payment of the deposit because you have kindly offered your time.

And as usual any dana by you is entirely in your gift.

However, your commitment is essential, for the course would be very difficult to run without an assistant and may indeed have to be cancelled.

We start actively to develop this power with the body as primary object. That makes it possible not to get fully entangled in the hindrances and to come to know something about them. Sitting meditation, walking meditation and daily activities are fully equal in importance. Gradually we come to know other objects of meditation, both internally and externally.’

Vipassana means “Seeing clearly”. When we see the world as it really is, we will be free from the distress that comes from identifying with a limited view of who and what we are.

During the retreat, we relax from all our usual busyness to give our full attention to present experience.  We learn to see the world more clearly, and to disentangle the knots of confusion that bind us to emotional turmoil.  At precious moments, the heart opens and we may sense what it means to be free.
