Our History

The Mahasi Sayadaw came to UK during the ’70s. Although there are city centres in UK where this tradition is being taught, there is no retreat centre as such devoted to this practice.

Bhante Bodhidhamma has been practising in the Mahasi Tradition since 1979 and has been teaching since ’85. Such has been the interest among lay people in this practice, especially in the UK and Ireland, that support came to establish Satipanya.

Satipanya is a small, intimate place of retreat that allows the kind of individual guidance that the Mahasi Sayadaw encouraged.

Our main purpose, therefore, is to teach the Mahasi Tradition of Vipassana Insight Meditation. It will be expected that anyone coming to the retreat will have this as their principle practice.
